Nice analysis! It's such an incredible story. I always learn from it, and you've done a lovely job of taking us through it so we can learn some more!

I tried to go over to ebooks and I just can't get there yet, myself. I like online magazines, but for longer books or whole collections of poetry I want the "old paper and glue books" too. It would be neat to make wall art out of book covers though...

Well put! The convenience vs. the security of a held object, caressed, known. I prefer the old paper and glue books, but I have too many, crowding me, and sometimes long for a clear table or desk, or floor. Sigh. Maybe an ebook with voice notes on your cell? You could always print the cover images and keep them visible, on the desk and floor, for atmosphere . . .

Nice piece, Nick. I added twitter to my computer today. I'm sure I will live to regret it. My glog (like a blog but more gooey) consists of book reviews I and others have written. Feel free to contribute.

I lie your idea of the small pieces of history: What if Hitler wasn't raised by Jesuits? What if Henry Ford was not Hitler's favorite American. And I like historical fiction that plays with altnerative outcomes, Like Philp K. Dick's Man in the HIgh Tower, where Germany and Japan have split the US between them.
