death of a road

By Nic Sebastian

a restless muttering road

lined with pearl-black flowers

and small dagger trees

she knows this road

she has spent many days

walking it

red eels weave glowing

through dark ditchwater

on either side

they stream in one direction swiftly

like all his answers

to her question

he says birdsong!

for pebble thought

he says this road ends in China

and she knows he's lying again

it ends right here in front of him

on its knees choking

small bubbles of blood bright

on its gravelly lips
